I still remember, in my youth, watching my dad in his makeshift darkroom. It seemed like magic when the image would appear from a blank piece of paper immersed in the developing tray. I was hooked. That was when I was still in high school, over 30 years ago. I have been taking pictures ever since.
I attended Virginia Commonwealth University for a year and a half. At that time VCU didn’t even offer photography as a course let alone a major so I ended up majoring in sculpture in order to do photography. If that sounds crazy, just remember it was the seventies. Any way I soon realized that college was not going to take me where I wanted to go. For the next 30 years I continued to take pictures while working as a bricklayer and going through the ups and downs that life throws at us. At present my full time job is in Web Development. I work for the firm linked at the bottom of this page.
Although at times I have considered myself a semi-pro in photography, I think the photo magazines would classify as an advanced amateur, but I just think of myself as someone who loves to take pictures and create art.
With most of the work on this site I started with 35 mm film, scanned the negative, used Photoshop to make color corrections and enhancements, and printed the final photograph on high quality photo matte paper with an Epson 1270 printer. Recently I have gone totally digital from the camera to the printer. The only tangible thing in the whole process is the final print, but that is the most important part. Although I do miss some aspects of the traditional darkroom, the recent advances in the field of digital imaging have opened up a whole new world of flexibility and creativity.
